According to data from Israel, at least 98 Palestinian individuals have lost their lives during detention since October 2023. An advocacy organization operating from Israel has indicated that the true figure is almost certainly significantly larger, due to many of disappeared individuals from Gaza.

Study Results

A new investigation documented deaths resulting from brutality, lack of healthcare, and inadequate nutrition. Researchers utilized transparency petitions, autopsy findings, and interviews with legal representatives, activists, next of kin, and eyewitnesses.

Israeli authorities disclosed complete information solely covering the first eight months of the conflict. Over this period, government statistics indicate an historically high casualty rate among Palestinian detainees, averaging a life lost once every four-day period.

Updated Statistics

Official armed forces most recently revised data on custodial deaths for May 2024, and correctional authorities in September 2024. Researchers identified a further 35 deaths in confinement following these timeframes and confirmed them with official sources.

Even with the aggregate figure of fatalities documented being substantially larger than other recent estimates, it almost certainly does not reflect the complete extent of Palestinian loss, as stated by the leader of the detainee affairs unit.

“Even though we are providing evidence for a higher number of deaths than earlier indicated, this is an incomplete account,” he said. “We are certain that there are yet people who lost their lives in detention that we are unaware of.”

Civilian Deaths

Restricted official information suggests that the vast majority of Palestinian detainees from Gaza who perished in jail were ordinary citizens, according to a related inquiry.

In May of this year, a military intelligence database monitoring all fighters in Gaza, a list of in excess of 47,000 named individuals, listed only 21 deaths in detention. At that time, 65 individuals from Palestine from Gaza had lost their lives in detention.

Detention Conditions

Assault, mistreatment, and other abuse of Palestinian individuals has been normalised across Israel’s jail system during two years of hostilities. Senior officials have publicly referenced starvation rations and an below-ground detention center holding Palestinians who are kept in darkness.

Merely one incident of assaulting inmates has proceeded to court, with the service member sentenced to half a year. An attempt to try other suspects over a brutal attack featuring abuse resulted in right-wing protests and the apprehension of Israel’s senior defense attorney, with the accused individuals now requesting that indictments against them are dropped.

No Legal Action

“Despite this large quantity of fatalities, throughout the conflict not a single person has been arrested,” the official stated. “There have been no charges over any fatality.

“While these practices are being applied, all Palestinian detainees in custody faces risk, including the physically well individuals, including the juveniles who have no underlying conditions.”

High-Profile Cases

Certain fatalities in confinement have been high profile, for instance a 50-year-old hospital director who perished in prison after 120 days in custody.

A prisoner incarcerated with the deceased stated that he was taken to the courtyard by guards just prior to his death, obviously hurt and naked from the hips downward. His corpse has not been repatriated to Gaza.

Additional detainees who perished in detention in Israel remain anonymous. Detention administrators and armed services gave analysts with the total of casualties in detention, and limited additional information for example the location where they perished, but without the inmates’ personal details.

Recognition Difficulties
