A Pig's Tale: Pig Named Six Seven Spared by Miami-Dade Mayor.
While perhaps not at the equivalent scale as granting clemency to holiday birds, but the mayor of Miami-Dade conducted a presidential-style act this week by ceremoniously saving the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the center of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“This pig is innocent. She deserves this act of mercy. No offenses are on her docket,” Levine Cava said in a speech with inescapable allusions to the extraordinary and sizable number of pardons issued since the onset of a current administration.
“Unless you count eating half a dozen apples per day,” she went on. “I hope she experiences a long and happy life free from concern.”
The gathering, simultaneously observing and challenging the local cultural practice of consuming swine during the holidays, was created to mirror the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The pig, provided by a local firefighter, was christened after the current slang trend of young people exclaiming “six seven” – originating from a musical verse – often without clear purpose. The trend became so ubiquitous that a leading lexicon site recently made “six-seven” its annual vocabulary selection.
A New Life
This particular pig is now scheduled to spend its days at a farm sanctuary “away from grills and cookware”, according to the event’s official press release.
“This swine clemency has become a beloved tradition to open the festive period,” said the event host, in a notably cheerful message.
“It captures the essence of Miami: happy, diverse, and rooted in traditions that bring people together. Annually, we are proud to celebrate culture and compassion in a way unique to Miami.”
Participants enjoyed a vegetarian menu of spinach croquetas and strong coffee as they toasted the pig's pardon.
