Arne Slot Maintains He Is Safe and Has Liverpool's Support After PSV Defeat
The Liverpool head coach conceded that it's understandable for doubts to be raised about his position following a further heavy loss versus PSV Eindhoven.
Liverpool endured their ninth defeat in twelve matches, marking the club's worst streak after being demoted in 1953-54.
They were dominated by the Dutch league title holders on a punishing night at Anfield.
“I'm confident, things are alright, I've received a lot of backing from management,” Slot stated.
“It would be nice to turn it around and get a victory of course but when you're coaching a team and not doing well then it's expected that doubts arise.”
He noted, “I accept my situation. This isn't the initial instance I've found myself in a tough spot but it is about time that we turned it around.”
Discussions with Liverpool Hierarchy
When asked to elaborate on his dialogues with the club's leadership, Slot revealed:
“We talk a lot. They are supportive for the squad and to me and those talks happen but they don’t call me constantly of the day to say they have faith in me.”
He mentioned, “In the normal conversations we have I perceive the confidence. However I haven’t spoken to them since this game so far so we'll see.”
Familiar Failings and Squad Reaction
The manager lamented familiar weaknesses from his Liverpool side in their European defeat, namely poor finishing and conceding too easily.
Meanwhile, midfielder Curtis Jones was more direct in his view of the club’s predicament.
“I haven't got the solutions. Truthfully, I don’t. I'm telling that to everybody,” Jones said.
“It’s just unacceptable. I don't need to wait to consider it. I’m past feeling anger inside. I've reached the stage now where I simply lack the phrases.”
He added, “It's tough because I play for the club I love. I support them, and I've watched Liverpool all my life.”
“For many years, I've not seen a Liverpool team enduring a phase like this with results this poor.”
Jones stated, “But we continue to wear the emblem on our chest. And as long as it is gone, we'll continue to fight.”
“Our aim is to bring this squad back to where it needs to be, prove again what this club is about and the reason it's called the greatest side in the world.”
“However currently, things are bad and we have to turn it around.”
