Ben & Jerry's Founding Partner Claims Parent Company Halted Palestine-Themed Frozen Dessert Product
The original creators of the well-known ice cream brand Ben & Jerry's has claimed how corporate owner the multinational conglomerate blocked the launch for a new pro-Palestinian ice cream flavor.
Ben Cohen, who established the company with his partner, announced that he will independently develop the controversial product within an individual series showcasing issues the company has been prevented from speaking out about.
Ongoing Conflict Involving Creators versus Corporate Owner
The recent announcement escalates the continuing conflict between the internationally recognized dessert company and its corporate parent, the British consumer goods corporation which has owned Ben & Jerry's for over two decades.
Both founders maintain how the parent company along with their ice cream division the Magnum brand improperly prevented their company from "fulfilling its ethical commitments".
Watermelon Sorbet becoming an Emblem of Solidarity
Mr. Cohen revealed via social media how he's developing an innovative watermelon-flavored sorbet, asking for public suggestions regarding naming options and potential ingredients.
“I'm accomplishing what they couldn't,” the founder commented from a cooking set. “I'm making a watermelon-based ice cream that advocates for permanent peace for Palestinians and calls for repairing the damage that was done there.”
This particular fruit has emerged as a symbol of support for Palestinians because of its coloration, that match the colors in Palestine's national banner – the distinctive four-color pattern.
Historical Activism and Current Changes
In 2021, the ice cream company refused to sell their merchandise in areas occupied by Israel, leading to Unilever transferring the Israeli operation over to a local licensee, thereby permitting ongoing distribution within the occupied West Bank.
The new dessert series will be created through Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the activist ice cream brand that originally established several years back to support former political contender Senator Sanders via the product "Bernie's Back".
Leadership Shifts and Future Intentions
Mr. Cohen revealed that he will develop other ice cream flavors focusing on concerns which Ben & Jerry's was prevented from speaking about openly due to Unilever.
The announcement follows partner Mr. Greenfield stepped down from the company recently, following many years of involvement, mentioning concerns that the company's autonomy had been undermined following corporate moves to restrict its social activism.
At that time, Ben Cohen remarked how "Jerry has strong compassion and the ongoing dispute with Unilever was breaking it."
"My heart compels me to continue to work inside the company to advocate for corporate autonomy so that the company can achieve its ethical purpose, the values which it was founded on and has maintained for decades," he explained to journalists.
