Christantus Uche Ignites Straightforward Crystal Palace Victory at Shelbourne.
Despite entering their first-ever continental campaign, Oliver Glasner's side are adapting very quickly. Missing key figures like striker Jean-Philippe Mateta and defender Daniel Muñoz, the Eagles departed Dublin with a comfortable result that virtually guarantees them a spot in the Conference League qualifying rounds.
Another victory in their next match against Finnish KuPS should be sufficient to seal straight passage to the knockout stages, particularly following a prior setback against Strasbourg.
Fringe Players Seize the Opportunity
This match provided a chance for some of Palace's fringe players to impress. Christantus Uche, making only his second beginning after arriving on loan from Getafe, notched the scoring with a clinical goal. Striker Eddie Nketiah added a another, finding the net for the second consecutive match.
The Shelbourne team that had finished their league season were no match against a mostly rotated Palace lineup. The visitors were further weakened by the news that Mateta and Muñoz are sidelined with knee problems.
Control Established from the Start
Despite heavy rain in Dublin, Palace quickly took control. A slick move in the 11th minute, sparked by Daichi Kamada's incisive pass, let Nketiah to set up Uche for a straightforward finish.
Youngster Adam Wharton went close soon after, fizzing a powerful shot over the bar. Nketiah subsequently claimed for a penalty after bursting into the area, but the official waved away the appeals.
Ex-Arsenal striker didn't need to wait long to find his goal, prodding home from close range after Uche's shot had struck the post.
Shelbourne were clinging on desperately. Full-back Kameron Ledwidge was lucky to avoid a booking for a couple of agricultural challenges on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards struck the woodwork with a powerful header from a corner.
Pino Seals the Contest
The match was effectively over eight minutes before half-time. Yeremy Pino meandered past a series of comically weak challenges before coolly dispatching a shot past goalkeeper Wessel Speel to extend the lead to 3-0.
After the break, coach Oliver Glasner took the chance to rest several individuals like Kamada and Wharton. Replacement Romain Esse almost scoring with his very first touch, but saw his shot blocked.
Esse was desperately unlucky later on, seeing one attempt crash off both posts before being clasped on the line. Uche also missed a sitter of a chance, showing there is still room for development in his game.
The only worry for Palace was a late injury to Justin Devenny, who was forced off. This allowed 17-year-old striker Benji Casey to earn his senior debut, capping an otherwise positive night for the traveling side.
