Information Available Regarding the Fatalities of the Bondi Shooting

At least 16 people perished and in excess of 40 sustained injuries when attackers opened fire at a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, a tragedy Australian police are describing as a act of terrorism.

As of the newest reports, officials have announced the number of fatalities is 16, which includes one of the suspected attackers. Furthermore, 42 wounded individuals were admitted to medical facilities.

The deceased are yet to be formally identified, but authorities state their ages span between 10 and 87 years of age.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Reportedly a father-of-five, he was the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and acquaintances described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative asked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, according to his wife.

She described the moments leading up to the shooting, saying they were standing when the gunfire started. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.

The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced immense hardship in their youth. They had later moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

Officially, a senior official declared that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the statement continued.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital succumbed to her injuries, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was a fatality during the attack, according to reports referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospitals, a significant number are still receiving treatment, with a number in serious condition. The injured include two police officers who attended the scene.

A casualty is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to confront one of the attackers. Described as a local hero, he received gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. It has been reported he was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital.

In a message, he described the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also noted the actions of those who rushed to help. He said he believed it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the attack. He described he listened to “a large number” of shots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
