Larian Studios Explains Its Use of Machine Learning for New Project

The studio behind popular RPGs like Baldur's Gate 3 and Divinity: Original Sin just shown its upcoming project, generating significant excitement within the player base. However, subsequent comments from the studio's co-founder have introduced a new dimension to the narrative, touching on the developer's philosophy toward generative artificial intelligence.

Augmenting Workflows, Not Cutting Jobs

In a new clarification, the studio's founder explained that the team is using AI technology for particular preliminary tasks. These involve developing pitch decks, producing initial visual ideas, and drafting placeholder copy.

Crucially, Vincke stressed that the shipping content in the game will be crafted exclusively by actual creatives. "Larian is creating all the content in-house," he said.

Larian is actively increasing our team of writers and are busily putting together narrative groups.

Given that this area is being particularly called out — we currently have over twenty visual developers and have job openings for further talent.

Everything we do is supplementary and focused on enabling creatives to spend additional energy on actual creation.

Every AI system applied correctly is supplementary to a developer's workflow, never a stand-in for their talent.

Responding to Feedback and Defining the Path

The news of employing this technology originally sparked backlash among some the fanbase. In response, Vincke offered more elaboration on social media.

"Our team utilizes AI tools to gather inspiration, similar to we use the internet and physical media," he wrote. "During the initial ideation stages we use it as a rough outline for layout which we then replace with hand-crafted concept art."

He continued, "We've hired creatives for their inherent skill, not for their ability to replicate what a machine suggests."

Key Areas of AI Integration

Vincke had earlier outlined the studio's targeted approach to AI and ML, grouping its use into key pillars:

  • Handling Monotonous Jobs: This encompasses refining animations, voice editing, and technical processes like adapting animations for different models.
  • Fast-Tracked Experimentation: Using technology to speedily create simple mock-ups of scenarios to experiment with concepts prior to complete production.
  • Future Potential for Gameplay: Exploring how AI could eventually enhance innovative player agency, particularly in simulating player-driven narratives in a vast role-playing world.

He clearly affirmed that central narrative areas — like music composition — are are in no way fields where the studio is replacing human talent. Conversely, Larian is expanding its staff in these very roles.

"We are neither shipping a game with machine-made assets, nor looking at trimming down staff to replace them with artificial intelligence," Vincke stated definitively.
