Manchester United Poised to Sign Germany Forward Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich
Manchester United are finalising completing the signing for prolific German forward Lea Schüller in a permanent move away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Major Signing for the WSL Side
The forward, with half a year remaining on her contract, is known as a prolific goalscorer for both club and country. She has scored more than 100 goals for the German giants and scored 54 times in 82 appearances for Germany. This signing is viewed as a major signing for the WSL team.
Her exit from Munich was expected since she was seen holding back emotions while applauding the club's fans after a victory over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
Reports in late December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its top strikers. Per reports, all the paperwork for the move have now been completed.
Consistent Goalscoring to Boost United's Attack
The experienced striker's signing is expected to provide a significant boost to United’s attacking options. She has been highly consistent in front of goal in Germany’s top flight.
- For seven straight seasons, including the last term, she achieved at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She won the Golden Boot in 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Building Steam at Old Trafford
Securing Schüller’s signature comes at a time when United seem to be building positive momentum.
Their recent on-pitch successes feature securing a place in the Champions League knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a win in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the mid-season window has seen additional activity:
- The acquisition of Sweden right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The new deal for Japan midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, a fan favourite since arriving in 2023.
Regarding Miyazawa’s new deal, a club official stated: “She has become a vital component to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and skill enables her and the team to control and dictate play from the middle of the park.”
Lundkvist, who has joined from a club in the NWSL, said: “You can sense how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, competing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the Champions League.”
