A popular South African media personality and entertainer has been shot dead in the metropolis of Johannesburg, causing national outrage across a country grappling with persistent crime.

Warrick Stock, widely recognized as DJ Warras, was gunned down in the city centre on Tuesday afternoon.

Officials stated the forty-year-old entertainer was confronted by three suspects, with one opened fire on him before running away.

The purpose behind the attack has not been established and no arrests are in custody, as per the official statement.

Details of the Attack

Police revealed that Stock was targeted as he was exiting a building near the Carlton Centre.

He had devoted time at the site overseeing the implementation of security systems, which had been reportedly taken over by unidentified individuals, according to reports.

"It is alleged the man was approached by three unidentified men after parking his vehicle, and they opened fire at him before escaping on foot," authorities said.

Security camera video showed a suspect with dreadlocks and dressed in what looked like a guard's attire firing shots on Stock before running away.

The DJ tried to run away after he was shot but fell down across the street.

It was further revealed that Stock had an unused firearm and no items were stolen during the attack.

Key evidence, like cartridges, were recovered from the scene.

Call for Public Assistance

Officials are asking members of the public who may have seen the suspects to assist with the investigation.

"Evidence suggests they traveled on foot after the shooting, and officers have been tracking them to establish their whereabouts," remarked an authority figure.

A Nation in Mourning

His family member, Nicole Stock, expressed the family was struggling to understand the tragedy.

"I am devastated. I don't have words," were her words.
"It is clear he was a representative for countless citizens. He was a fearless commentator about issues not many people were ready to tackle. This is a profound tragedy."

She requested the community to avoid sharing disturbing footage from the scene, saying this was an deeply traumatic time, above all for Stock's three sons.

Stock was the star of Ngicel' iVisa, a series that aired on a South African digital satellite entertainment channel.

Apart from his work in broadcasting, Stock was engaged in various business ventures, including security provision, supplying VIP protection services and protecting prestigious gatherings across South Africa.

He was also said to be engaged in property management and participated in tenant removals.

His killing has shocked the country and prompted an outpouring of tributes from his fans, the authorities and various organizations.

A government minister commented he was angry and saddened by Stock's killing.

"He expressed his views without fear or favour. He even challenged me and my actions as a public official. He was a shining model of who we must aspire to be," he stated.

A public representative said the "audacious attack of DJ Warras in the middle of the day is a tragedy for all South Africans".

A broadcasting director noted that "Stock was not merely a TV personality. He was a skilled narrator, a dedicated enthusiast of music and a kind-hearted individual who brought excitement and dynamism to every appearance. His artistic passion left an indefinable mark."

In a release, the channel he worked for declared Stock was known for his charisma, approachability and intelligent commentary, adding that his legacy "will endure".
