The teenager has featured in seven games for the Spanish giants, including five starts.

Whenever a 18-year-old creates club a historic moment in a key European tie against City, it naturally attracts praise and the spotlight.

In only his first start in the tournament - and fifth appearance for the club - Thiago Pitarch suitably impressed as the fifteen-time European champions claimed a three-nil round of 16 first-leg lead at the Bernabeu.

The teenager, who also made his club debut in the play-off round a month ago with a substitute appearance at Sporting Lisbon, then assisted Los Blancos defeat the English champions in the midweek second leg to secure a last eight place.

At 18 years and 226 days, Pitarch was the team's most youthful starter to start twice in the Champions League's latter rounds, beating star Vinicius Jr's record by 10 days.

A Meteoric Rise From The Academy

The midfielder is the most recent to come through from the famed youth system and is rapidly cementing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most exciting young players.

He signed for Real from Leganes in 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico Madrid and Getafe academies, and initially featuring for the Juvenil C team, where he rapidly created a strong impression.

He worked his way up to the reserve side and it was in a friendly match in which they played against the academy's first team, then managed by Arbeloa, where the youngster is said to have caught the attention of the present manager, who replaced the previous coach in January.

Spanish media would later describe the moment as "an instant connection," noting he stood out not only for his skill on the ball, but for the energy, character and determination he brought to the side.

'His Best Attribute Is His Personality'

In the pre-season of 2025, former boss Xabi Alonso invited Pitarch to train with the first team and gave him minutes during pre-season.

However, it was the change in manager that proved the turning point in his career as he came on as a second-half replacement in both ties against Benfica that led to the clash with Manchester City.

"I have dreamed of this every night before going to bed, the first day I began playing football, each day you head to training and every day you play a match," said Pitarch after his debut.

"I've just fulfilled my dream with the best team in the planet and in the top tournament."

Given a first start in the Spanish league against Getafe - where he spent four years after arriving from Atleti in 2018 - he has kept his spot for the next four as fitness issues to Bellingham and Dani Ceballos created an opening.

The teenager has seized it with displays that have defied his age and experience.

"He is a extremely fast footballer, and you can observe his capabilities," said Arbeloa. "He's extremely energetic, with great endurance, work-rate and movement."

Pitarch's mentality has also stood out to his coach.

"His greatest quality is his character," added Arbeloa. "He constantly demands the ball, and when pressed, he doesn't feel it.

"I understand fans might be astonished to see him start in a Champions League match, but he is selected because I had total trust in him to do what he usually does.

"He will continue to get opportunities with the first team. It's a pleasure to coach a talent like him."

Spain or Morocco?

Pitarch was born in Fuenlabrada, in the Madrid region, and was raised deeply involved in the local game, progressing through youth setups before entering Real Madrid's renowned La Fabrica system.

He possesses both Spanish and Moroccan citizenship, offering him the choice to represent both nations at senior international level.

Under international regulations, players may appear for multiple nations at youth level without being permanently tied, with the ultimate choice only binding once they play in a competitive full international.

Pitarch has played for Spain at underage levels, turning out for both the under-19 and U20 teams, and took part in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where La Roja made it to the last eight.

Nevertheless, he has yet to commit to any senior national team, who are monitoring his rise with keen attention.

Speaking recently, the player confirmed: "I have not taken my ultimate choice yet. Things are great with Spain, but I will reach a conclusion in the near future."

This scenario mirrors that of other bi-national talents such as club colleague Diaz and Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal. While 18-year-old Lamine opted for La Roja, Diaz decided to play for the Atlas Lions.

Eyes on the Prize

At present, his attention is on establishing himself in the Madrid lineup and repaying his manager's belief.

He featured for 74 minutes in the two-one victory at City, which sealed a 5-1 overall triumph and a quarter-final tie with the German champions.

His substitution by fellow youth graduate in Angel underscored the coach's confidence in the next generation to aid the club pursue future success.

After his notable contributions to date on the Champions League, Pitarch is expected to be a central figure in that.

"Arbeloa treats me the same. We handle it very naturally. I attempt not to overanalyze it too much - I have to deserve my minutes on the pitch," he commented following the win at Etihad Stadium.
