The distinctive yellow-colored apartment block in the background helped us verify the video.

Our team is analyzing video footage and photographs shared earlier today that depict the aftermath of a alleged car bomb explosion that authorities in Russia state fatally injured a senior soldier in Moscow.

Russian authorities stated that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was in the vehicle that exploded and that he succumbed of his injuries. A probe is currently ongoing.

The initial step to check the site from which the images originated was based on social media reports saying the explosion happened on Yasenevaya Street in the southern part of the Russian capital.

We used street-view imagery on digital map platforms and the Russian search engine Yandex Maps to corroborate the unique yellow hue of a adjacent residential complex captured in the video.

Identifying additional structures, streetlights and the road configuration verified the exact location the pictures were captured.

Additionally, we verified that the video clips were new and that the visuals had not undergone digital alteration.
