Zohran Mamdani affirms his intention to make his home in historic Gracie Mansion
NYC's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to live in the traditional Gracie Mansion, vacating his rent-controlled apartment that sparked debate throughout his election bid.
A Traditional Abode
Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the mayoral home for most New York City mayors since the post-war period.
However, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a core policy, was not quick to announce he would live there right away following his electoral win in November.
"My choice came down to our family's safety and the importance of dedicating my full attention on carrying out the affordability agenda New Yorkers supported," the Mayor-Elect declared on Monday.
A Fond Farewell
His home was in Astoria, Queens, an area famous for its abundance of immigrant communities and global cuisine.
"To the people of Astoria: my gratitude for demonstrating the true spirit of New York City," Mamdani's statement said.
"Even though I'm moving there, the community will forever remain within me and my efforts as mayor," he said.
Political Debate
In his race for mayor, Mamdani tied his central policy – a rent freeze – to his own housing situation.
However his opponents, including former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for living in the apartment even though he came from a famous family.
A House Not Always Used
Not all mayors have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, kept his residence in his personal mansion on the Upper East Side for his tenure, which wrapped up in 2012.
Instead, Bloomberg argued it could serve as a space for official events, and pushed for significant upgrades of the historic mansion.
A Stately Residence
Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion sometime around his first day on 1 January, he will find himself in an environment a stark contrast to his modest Astoria apartment.
With its butter yellow paint, green shutters, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure with views of the East River.
Within, the lower floor of the historically styled mansion is appointed consistent with the home's original era.
The compound, which allegedly has five bedrooms, also includes increased security measures to protect the mayor and his family.
Supernatural Speculation
Some residents have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.
Chirlane McCray, the spouse of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that doors would sometimes open and closed by themselves, and the floorboards made strange noises.
Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "I don't care what anyone says," he stated in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."
The Value of Rent Stabilization
His former home is rent stabilised, which means the city regulates on how much landlords can hike the monthly cost each year.
City residents see such units as crucial resources as the cost of housing outpaces what many can afford.
Records showed Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Based on data from real estate analysts Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
